Queen City Virtuosi, Charlotte’s premier chamber orchestra, will present its debut concert, “An Ideal Evening” on Friday, May 29, 8 p.m. at the McGlohon Theatre Spirit Square.
Young, pioneering conductor and Charlottean Lynn Fuller, one of only a few female conductors in the country, founded Queen City Virtuosi in 2009.
Unlike other large, cosmopolitan cities in the United States, the cultural landscape of Charlotte-Mecklenburg does not include a performing arts organization dedicated exclusively to chamber orchestra performances and works composed specifically for chamber orchestra. Queen City Virtuosi will fill this void.
Queen City Virtuosi is comprised of the finest musicians from prominent performing arts organizations and ensembles in Charlotte and the Carolinas, including the Charlotte Symphony, with Concertmaster Calin Lupanu, the Greensboro Symphony, the Winston-Salem Symphony, the Charleston Symphony, the La Catrina Quartet, and the Degas Quartet.
The debut concert, “An Ideal Evening,” will feature Sinfonia No. 85 “La Reine” (Haydn), Mouvements Perpetuels (Poulenc), Five Pieces for String Orchestra (Hindemith), and Divertimento for String Orchestra (Bartók). Each composer shares the characteristic of being an idealist – Haydn through his development of the classical symphony, Poulenc through his membership in Le Six, Hindemith by composing Gebrauchmusik, and Bartók by interpreting his own harmonic language based on folk songs. In addition, 2009 is the 200th anniversary of Haydn’s death on May 31, 1809, almost to the day the inaugural concert is scheduled.
